Deschutes County Greenlights new Rural ADU Program!

Enhancing Housing Options in Rural Deschutes County

Deschutes County has taken a significant step toward addressing the growing need for housing by approving a new program that allows for the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in rural areas. This new program is expected to provide much-needed housing options for families, individuals, and seniors. The county will begin accepting applications December 1, 2023.

Unlocking the Potential of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

ADUs, also known as granny flats or in-law units, are smaller, independent housing units that are located on the same lot as a single-family home. ADUs can be attached to the main house, detached, or even located above a garage. ADUs can provide a variety of benefits, including:

    • Increased housing options for people who are looking for smaller, more affordable housing units.

    • A place for elderly parents or other family members to live close by.

    • Additional rental income for homeowners.

    • Increased property value.

The New Rural ADU Program

The new rural ADU program allows for the construction of ADUs in most rural residential areas in Deschutes County. The program has a number of restrictions in place to protect the environment and ensure compatibility with surrounding neighborhoods. Some of the key restrictions include:

    • ADUs must be located on lots that are at least two acres in size. In Southern Deschutes County, the property must be at least five acres.

    • ADUs must be limited to 900 square feet.

    • ADUs must be located within 100 feet of the primary dwelling.

Navigating the ADU Permit Process

If you are interested in building an ADU on your property, you will need to apply for a permit from Deschutes County Community Development. The application process is relatively straightforward and can be completed online or in person.  See https://www.deschutes.org/cd/page/accessory-dwelling-units-adus for more information.

    • Increased affordability: ADUs can provide more affordable housing options for families, individuals, and seniors.

    • Improved quality of life: ADUs can provide a place for elderly parents or other family members to live close by, which can improve the quality of life for both the family and the individual living in the ADU.
